The Book of Jeremiah

A review by Don Thomas

The book of Jeremiah was the first book of the prophets chosen by the mens’ Monday night study group, Jeremiah's ministry stretched over 40 years ending a few years after Judah ceased to be a nation.

Under King Manassah there was 50 years of apostasy followed by religious reform under King Josiah. Jeremiah supported the reform until he realised that it was not changing the people hearts. Two years after Josiah's death Babylon gained controll over western Asia. From that time Jeremiah advocated submission to Babylon. In chapters 21 verse 8 and 9 Jeremiah is told to tell the people, behold I set before you the way of life and the way of death. He who stays will perish he who goes over to the Caldeans will have his own life as booty.  The false prophets cried peace and safety but because the continuous religious apostasy Eliohim was moved to bring Jeremiah's words of calamity and dispersion on his chosen people.  However Jeremiah also prophesed a remenent would return to live under Messiah's rule and religious and social security.  This explains Jeremiah's doctrine of the new or renewed convenant.  In chapters 29 verse 4-7 Elohim tells the exiles to go into captivity build houses plant gardens and multiple and not decrease.  Seek the welfare of the city where I have sent you, pray to the Lord on its behalf; for in its welfare you will have welfare.  See article on praying for and being watchmen for our city.
